During my visit to the city of Pardubice and its surroundings I could see historical places, nature, traditions and savor a rich and varied cuisine, typical of the Czech Republic. Maybe these are things that can be common to several destinations in Central Europe, but I'm sure you will not be able to find another place is a stud like the one you can visit in the Royal Stables of Kladruby Nad Labem, located on the outskirts of Pardubice.

One of the oldest studs in the world

In Kladruby nad Labem they have been raising horses since the fourteenth century.

Although the Habsburgs brought to these stables a good number of powerful Spanish specimens, finally an exclusively Czech breed began to be raised here: The old horse Kladruber. It is the oldest equine lineage in the entire Czech Republic.

For more than 300 years (from 1579 to 1918), the Kladruby nad Labem stud farm was owned by the empire and was responsible for raising horses to send them to the royal and imperial courts of Prague and Vienna. From 1918, the stables passed into the hands of the state, even being declared a National Monument.

The facilities of the stud Kladruby nad Labem

Stud in Pardubice

On an April morning in which if they tell me that I am in the summer of Alicante I would have believed it, I was looking for a shadow with despair while our guide told us the details of the stud's facilities.

The girl explained everything with a passion that only people who have really found a job they love can show. Under the shade of a large tree near the main stables, he told us that the land of the stud Kladruby nad Labem occupy no less than 3,000 acres of land.

In them, the heart and key piece of the complex, is formed by Main stables, the castle and the church. These three buildings are open to the public and can be visited with a guide.

Right next to the stables, is the imperial castle. Inside, you will find a good number of rooms that were used by the Habsburg nobility when they wanted to visit the stables where most of the horses they rode came from.

From the main courtyard of the Kladruby nad Labem stud, a long path of just over 3 km starts, flanked by trees and next to which you will find the main grasslands. Here, at different times of the day, you can see the horses grazing carefree.

What kind of horses breed in Kladruby nad Labem and what role do they have?
