The chosen area would be in the immediate vicinity of the Pico du Midi.
On the same top of the mountain is an observatory built at the end of the nineteenth century.
The idea of the French government is based on creating a radius between 10 and 15 kilometers of complete darkness to prevent artificial light from obstructing the views of the cosmos. This would be the first reserve of darkness in Europe and astronomers around the world have celebrated the idea with great expectation.
