When you ask a Chinese what would be their idyllic destination to spend their vacations, 90% will answer you Yangshuo or Guilin.

To get to Yangshuo We took a flight that left Xian at 7.45 am and left us in Guilin after less than two hours. We got the same as the train -390RMB per person- but it lasted about 25 hours less. From Guilin airport you have to take a bus that leaves you near the train station of this city. From the station car park a bus leaves to Yangshuo -15RMB, you pay on the bus so do not go with the people who try to sell you the cheapest ticket outside- which takes an hour and a half and stops everywhere. There is also an express service -18 RMB- that leaves from the Guilin bus station (near the train station).

Personally I recommend the orange duck Lucy's Heaven. Lucy is a great aunt who runs her own western-oriented bar but with Asian dishes on the menu. Its natural orange juice is the best I've had in all of China and with it and Eloy - a Dutchman in his 50 tacos who spent seasons visiting Lucy - we had good conversations by becoming regular customers of the place. Thanks to them we met several things about China, such as the fact that nobody has anything in real estate, but they are rental contracts for 60 or 70 years, being the State the owner of everything.

Walking down West Street we end at the Li River, one of the main attractions of the entire region. You can take a ride on a basic bamboo boat for 10RMB if you haggle, but in reality it is not the prettiest area to navigate it.

The city was a hotbed of people because of the Chinese New Year. There were few western tourists we saw on the street and some Chinese looked at us pointing out laughing and curious faces.

The night march in summer it seems to be very intense although being winter several bars were half full and western music invades the quiet streets of downtown. The drink is cheap and this is a good claim for the younger Westerners who come in search of a party as a perfect complement to the beautiful landscapes.

It is a good place to walk quietly in Autumn - being September and October the best months to visit it - but without doubt the attraction is in its surroundings with many activities to explore one of the most beautiful regions of the country.

I tell you the excursions we did in the next articles!
